Artist Biography
My name is Kylie Kolodziej and I am a student about to graduate from Endicott College with a BFA focus in Photography. Photography has been a passion of mine since I was in the second grade. It began when I would steal my mom’s camera to take pictures of everything and anything. Finding an interest in photography at such a young age was a very exciting thing for me because I always had the answer to the question “what do you want to be when you grow up?” and the answer never changed. I enjoy capturing moments because they can be revisited at any time and become a reminder of a happy time. I am excited to use the skills that I have learned while at Endicott and in real life to find a career doing what I love.
Thesis Abstract
The images that I have created are representing the “anti-Instagram” portrait. I wanted to show the real life of a person, things that would not typically be seen posted. Instagram and social media have created this idea of an “ideal” for people. This is very relevant for people my age growing up in a time where social media is dominant in our lives. I wanted to create the feeling of being alone in a space that would typically not be used for a social media portrait. I am trying to create an image that doesn’t look like a perfect life. This project has evolved a lot since the beginning, I started in the studio trying to cover parts of faces to show how people are hiding but this still looked too perfect for the “anti portrait”. The original plan was to have many different models that could not happen with the coronavirus. I ended up using my twin as my model for the whole project which ended up working out well in the end. The use of a consistent model helped to truly show her in her own space in different ways.
