Thesis Abstract

Throughout the years I have developed an affinity for natural landscapes and capturing their unique stories. For my thesis project Hidden Dreams of a Restful Earth, I sought to experiment within this genre. This collection of landscapes and seascapes demonstrates a contemporary approach to the subject matter. Through my own vision, I challenged the stylistic components of a well-established genre of photography by using a neutral density filter to create long exposure landscape images. Feelings of mystery and otherworldliness result from the dreamy waters, rocks and trees. The ghosted motion of water and simplicity of the land creates beautiful moments that emphasize calmness and tranquility. These moments are normally hidden to the naked eye, yet can be seen using a long exposure technique that uncovers a new perspective on these coastal and water based environments. Inspired by the work of landscape photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto, this series uses surreal and minimalistic imagery to bring appreciation to aspects of our world that are often overlooked.
