Thesis Abstract
This thesis explores the concept of the “third place” which is anywhere that people choose to spend their time that is not work or home. Common third places include bars, restaurants, movie theaters, and coffee shops, but these places are on the decline across the country. Conversely, society is being faced with a major rise in loneliness and isolation due to the increased use of, and accessibility of , technology and social media. Both social media and technology have the power to make humanity the most interconnected it has ever been, but instead it has been causing damage to individual’s self esteem, relationships, and sense of community. Through this research, The Place was born and offers a new community center for the city of Newport, RI. It is my hope that with this project, people can come together, engage in meaningful conversation, step away from the virtual reality that so many live in, and appreciate the beautiful world that surrounds us.
