Thesis Abstract

This thesis explores how architecture can be a crucial part in the healing process especially for long term recovery centers. This project explores design principles such as circadian rhythm and biophilia and their influence on physical and emotional well being. Located in Gloucester, Massachusetts, the project responds to the growing need for healthcare spaces that move beyond clinical efficiency and instead prioritize the human experience. By carefully shaping natural light, materiality, spatial organization, and connections to nature, the design seeks to reduce stress, improve sleep cycles, enhance mood, and encourage daily activity for patients, staff, and visitors. Architectural strategies such as dynamic daylighting, stained glass installations, landscaped courtyards, sensory-friendly quiet spaces, and restorative circulation paths transform the building into an active participant in the healing process. Sustainability is integrated through green roofs, daylight optimization, and site-responsive planning that respects the surrounding landscape. The project demonstrates how architecture can become a therapeutic tool while supporting rehabilitation not only through medical care, but through environments that restore dignity, comfort, and connection to the rhythms of everyday life.
