Thesis Abstract
How can biophilic design enhance human well-being and productivity in urban environments that typically lack nature, and how does incorporating natural elements into the architecture of an outpatient apartment complex contribute to psychological, physiological, and cognitive benefits for residents and patients?
Biophilic design can enhance urban living by strengthening the human-nature connection and improving well-being. A proposed residential community in Boston, MA, applies these principles to support patient recovery, integrating natural elements into the community to promote healthier lifestyles and redefine urban wellness.
The design of Verdant Living integrates linear architecture with fluid shapes to connect the urban environment to natural elements. All of the materials included in the design are influenced by the natural world and bring the outdoor feel to interior spaces. The target user group for my project consists of patients in recovery who will benefit from residing in a biophilic community. These individuals are seeking natural healing during their recovery from both mental and physical health challenges. While they do not require continuous care from healthcare professionals, they do need to be part of a supportive environment that fosters their healing journey. This community will provide biophilic living spaces, including apartments designed with natural elements, as well as access to biophilic recovery rooms tailored to support their overall well-being.
