Thesis Abstract

In Scituate, where coastal flooding has shaped both landscape and daily life, Pier 143 emerges as a response rooted in care, resilience, and community. For decades, rising waters have transformed public schools into emergency shelters, disrupting routines and displacing residents. This project asks: how can architecture better support a community in moments of crisis while enriching it year-round? Pier 143 reimagines the role of a shelter as more than a place of refuge. It is a living, mixed-use environment—offering safety during flood seasons and evolving into a vibrant destination for gathering, dining, working, and resting in times of calm. Its name reflects this duality: the pier as a place of grounding and return, and “143,” drawn from Minot’s Ledge Light, meaning “I love you” in lighthouse code. At the heart of the project, a sculptural staircase rises through the Welcome Center, inspired by the motion of a stone skipping across water. Each touchpoint creates a ripple—moments of connection, reflection, and shared experience. Like the community it serves, these ripples extend outward, shaping a space defined not only by resilience but by compassion and continuity.
