Mary Hart

Artist Biography

Mary is a senior soon-to-be graduate of Endicott College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture. During her time at Endicott, she enjoyed studying abroad twice in Cork, Ireland. She has experience at three design internships, including a full semester internship completed in Ireland. During these internships she gained experience solving real world design problems in residential, healthcare, and restaurant settings. Following the start of her first internship at Upstate Down she was hired as a junior designer and continues to return there every summer.

Raised in a quiet and historic small town in New York, Mary has been surrounded by good design her whole life. She enjoys summertime, when it is easiest to walk around the local historic sites and observe a variety of design eras from Beaux-Arts to Dutch vernacular architecture. These opportunities have served as a source of inspiration for Mary, with each visit teaching her more and more. The rest of her free time is filled by watching films, reading Jane Austen, traveling, and researching random history topics that fascinate her.

She’d like to offer a special shoutout to her family, friends, boyfriend, and loving pet bunny for their support over the years!

Thesis Abstract

Stable Art Center is a unique, multidisciplinary art center for the San Antonian public. It responds to the question: “How can the novelty architecture style be used to build and strengthen communities?”.

A decline in playful and eccentric building designs is apparent in the U.S. This disappearance, along with feelings of placelessness can be tied back to a lack of engaging community use spaces. Historically, novelty architecture acts as a captivating and incentivizing design, making it a valuable option for building a community in. This project seeks to address these needs through an arts center that reintroduces the artistic qualities of novelty architecture while facilitating connections between users.
