Thesis Abstract
The Unity Exchange was a personal project for Hannah, inspired by the loving and supportive connections she shares with her family. This sense of connection extends to her friends as well, who over time have become a chosen family and another shoulder to lean on. However, being in such a fortunate position naturally brings awareness to those who are not. In recent years, Hannah’s family has grown more motivated to support and uplift children and families in their community who may lack the connections or resources needed to thrive together.
Third spaces are environments where people can form friendships, exchange ideas, and build trust. They create a shared setting where individuals from diverse backgrounds can come together and interact. Whether used by families or individuals, these spaces offer common ground that fosters connection. The impact they have on relationships, mental health, and cultural awareness is significant. People with strong family support systems tend to become confident, stable, and grounded members of their communities. By extending the benefits of strong family structures, through support, connection, and a sense of belonging, we can begin to replicate the everyday functions of a positive family environment within an inclusive third-place setting.
