Thesis Abstract

The GRACE Program (Growth, Resilience, Awareness, Compassion, and Empowerment) is a transitional wellness center designed to support young adults navigating restrictive eating disorders during the critical shift into adulthood. Located in Long Island, New York, the GRACE Program fosters healing through structure, education, and community, empowering individuals aged 18–25 to reclaim control over their physical and emotional well-being. This project responds to the rising mental health crisis among young adults, where independence, social pressures, and the loss of routine can intensify disordered eating behaviors. Through structured interventions such as therapy, nutritional education, group support, and life-skills programming, GRACE oers a compassionate alternative to clinical or institutional care. The center is designed to feel safe, nurturing, and deeply human with an emphasis on routine, community, and choice.

Biophilic design principles, warm material palettes, and spatial rhythms grounded in nature help create a calming, restorative environment that mirrors the goals of the program itself. Key features include residential-style living quarters, individual and group therapy rooms, communal dining spaces, classrooms, outdoor courtyards, and a pool area for holistic wellness. More than a recovery center, the GRACE Program is a place of growth, where young adults are given the space, tools, and support to rebuild with strength and intention.
