Thesis Abstract
Changing Tides: Aquatic Research & Rehabilitation Center serves as both a sanctuary for marine life and a hub for environmental education and community engagement. Located at 10 Concord St., Gloucester, MA, the project integrates key elements including a public aquarium, a veterinary clinic, a research facility, a volunteer center, and a gift shop. Together, these spaces support the full cycle of sea turtle recovery—from rescue and medical treatment to rehabilitation and release, while also fostering public awareness and stewardship.
The center is designed to promote interaction between visitors, researchers, and the natural environment. Public areas like the aquarium and gift shop invite guests to learn about marine conservation in an engaging, immersive way, while dedicated spaces for beach cleanups and certified diver programs encourage hands-on involvement in
protecting ocean ecosystems. The architectural approach emphasizes sustainability, accessibility, and a deep connection to the coastal landscape, aligning the built environment with the center’s mission to heal, educate, and inspire.
