Thesis Abstract

This Capstone project explores themes of aesthetic experience, everyday encounters with nature, and elements of emotion. Through painting, I reflect on fleeting moments in the monotony of daily life that spark a sense of beauty and appreciation of nature. To understand these types of experiences my research draws on theoretical applications of aesthetics and environmental philosophy.

I incorporate retrospection and photographs of commonplace environments that elicits admiration of the ephemeral qualities of a passing moment. These are translated into a series of five oil paintings on wood panel.

The installation was constructed to represent a window into my own connections and experiences. It offers the potential to mediate further appreciation through artwork and invite mindfulness towards one’s own everyday. This project intends to illuminate consideration for nature whose routine presence can be overlooked as we speed through our busy lives.
