Thesis Abstract

At its heart, the Enlighten Social Impact Center seeks to diminish the emotional and psychological strains often experienced by LGBTQIA+ individuals and their surrounding networks following the disclosure of their sexual orientation or gender identity. By offering a nurturing environment free from judgment and discrimination, the center endeavors to mitigate the need for community members to constantly explain themselves to family and friends post-coming out. Instead, Enlighten aims to empower individuals by providing comprehensive resources and fostering understanding among both LGBTQIA+ individuals and their allies. Central to the design philosophy of Enlighten is the recognition that misinformation and societal misconceptions frequently exacerbate the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals during and after the coming out process. Through targeted educational initiatives and accessible resources, the center endeavors to bridge the gap of understanding between community members and their broader social circles. By dispelling myths, offering support services, and promoting dialogue, Enlighten strives to cultivate a more inclusive and empathetic society.
