Thesis Abstract

Conexia is a women and children’s domestic violence shelter located in Charleston, South Carolina, bridging a gap between response and a pressing need, a critical step towards fostering lasting societal change. By providing a safe haven for victims of domestic violence, this shelter becomes a beacon of hope, offering refuge, support, and resources to those who have endured unimaginable hardships. Beyond its immediate impact on the lives of individual women, the shelter’s presence signals a commitment to dismantling the deeply ingrained structures that perpetuate violence within our communities. As survivors regain control over their lives, the ripple effects extend to families, neighborhoods, and the broader demographic, contributing to a culture of empathy, empowerment, and ultimately, breaking the cycle of abuse. In investing in such shelters, Charleston not only safeguards its vulnerable population but also paves the way for a future where the prevailing narrative is one of resilience, equality, and compassion, setting a precedent for positive societal outcomes that transcend generations. Victims of domestic violence endure emotional, physical, verbal and financial abuse to which they are often unable to successfully leave and become independently self-sufficient within society due to lack of available resources, assistance and basic mental or physical healthcare. By providing a secure environment that addresses the needs along with education and sustainable living, these victims can start to heal and gain autonomy over their lives.
