Thesis Abstract
How can design be utilized as an effective tool to improve K-12 educational outcomes for low-income children and mitigate the adverse effects of poverty by fostering environments that support mental health, cognitive development, and resource preservation?
The Resource Educational Collective focuses on educational equity and attainment for children from impoverished backgrounds. The organization aims to repair poverty’s lasting impacts on the educational system so that children in these settings can prepare for their future successes and thrive academically to break the generational cycle. There is a diverse list of services including a preschool, before and after school care, tailored classrooms for different types of learning, an indoor sensory playscape, and lots of community engagement opportunities. The REC fosters relationships, including teamwork and communication skills needed for healthy friendships. Additional resources include therapy spaces, school counseling to help plan post secondary education, a library filled with school supplies, recreational fields, and a rooftop garden. All together, a safe environment will be established for the students and community alike.
