Thesis Abstract

The retail industry has witnessed a transformative shift in recent years, marked by the rising popularity of online shopping, which has consequently led to a decline in foot traffic within brick-and-mortar stores. Particularly affected are younger consumers, whose engagement with physical retail spaces has dwindled in favor of digital alternatives. This project explores the imperative for retailers to reassess their store design strategies in order to revitalize the appeal of in-person shopping experiences. Drawing upon insights from various disciplines including marketing, psychology, and technology, the paper examines the role of sensory design elements, customer engagement initiatives, and innovative technologies in enhancing the overall consumer experience within retail environments. By creating a compelling blend of physical and digital interactions, retailers can cultivate a sense of community, foster consumer loyalty, and adapt to the evolving needs of today’s shoppers. Through a comprehensive analysis, this project underscores the importance of embracing innovation and strategic design to rejuvenate the in-store retail experience in an increasingly digital landscape.
