Thesis Abstract
In the wake of increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters worldwide, there arises a critical need to address the often-overlooked trauma experienced by canine survivors. Dogs displaced by such disasters endure profound psychological and physical distress, thus needing specialized care and support. This abstract advocates for the establishment of a dedicated rescue and rehabilitation facility tailored specifically to the needs of these resilient animals. Drawing upon interdisciplinary research in psychology, veterinary science, and disaster management, this abstract highlights the profound impact of natural disasters on canine populations. Dogs exhibit symptoms of trauma alike to humans, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Furthermore, the physical toll of displacement, injuries, and exposure to harsh environments highlights the urgency of providing comprehensive medical attention and rehabilitation services. Existing rescue facilities often lack the resources, space and expertise to adequately address the unique needs of traumatized dogs. Therefore, the proposal for a specialized facility emerges as a crucial intervention to transform the average rescue center into a safe haven hub for those canines and more. This haven would offer a variety of approaches, encompassing state-of-the-art veterinary care, behavioral therapy, and socialization programs tailored to each dog’s individual needs. Moreover, it would serve as a hub for research and education, advancing our understanding of canine trauma and informing best practices in disaster response and animal welfare. By prioritizing the well-being of these vulnerable beings, society demonstrates its commitment to compassion and resilience in the face of adversity. The establishment of a dedicated rescue and rehabilitation facility represents a tangible step towards honoring the bond between humans and dogs and ensuring a brighter, more secure future for all beings affected by natural disasters.
