Thesis Abstract

How might a dedicated space fostering a profound connection to nature, self, healing, and support enhance the well-being of veterans battling mental illness and other life challenges?

Wing’s Spread: United Veterans Community and Resource Center focuses on re-instilling honor to those who have served our country by providing a space that offers mental health services, financial and job advisings, recreational activities, and transitional housing. A rising number of veterans in the United States face homelessness upon their return home due to mental health, financial strains, or relationship issues. Through a biophilic centered facility, veterans and the community alike will be able to recognize the hard work and dedication that the military endures from the lens of the veterans who will have the ability to speak up on their truths in the museum gallery as well as opportunities to help aid the management of the facility to give a sense of ownership of their own experiences. With two gardens and skywalk bridges that connect the two buildings, there is no escape from nature, forcing those using the facility to be surrounded by nature not only through interior design but also through the landscape. The goal of this space  is to give a voice to veterans who have not been able to feel like themselves and to shed light to their struggles and traumas by bringing together a community of brothers and sisters to support and encourage the restoration of a society that rather than neglecting the veteran population, doesn’t hesitate to serve those that serve us.
