Carly Pierce

Artist Biography

Senior Carly Pierce will be graduating this spring with a BFA in Interior Architecture, after four years of success in the classroom and on the field as a member of the Women’s Lacrosse team. Throughout her time at Endicott, Carly has completed three internships, one of which gave her the opportunity to travel across the country to Colorado for a semester. For all her hard work, she has earned a place on the Dean’s List every semester, as well as Scholar-Athlete awards and multiple Conference Athlete awards. Her thesis was chosen out of inspiration from her passion for the outdoors combined with her experience at Colorado’s farmer’s markets and years working on an organic blueberry farm.

In the past few years, new advances in technology have stripped away the basics of past lifestyles. In attempts at reintroducing people to their natural and simple state of being, the UnCommon community hub works to reconnect the users back to their own bodies, the environment, and the people around them.

Thesis Abstract

A public market combining nutrition education, horticulture, and a space for community connection will aid in pivoting our standards back to the core of human nourishment in regard to what we are consuming and the effects our food supply has on the environment.

33% of Coloradans lack reliable access to nutritious food, 70% of the American diet is made up of processed foods and approximately 133 billion pounds of the food that is produced in the United States goes to waste. On top of that, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their life. It is known that individuals who spend at least two hours outdoors were significantly more likely to report better health and well-being compared to those who were spending more time indoors. There has become a disconnect within our food systems, nutrition education, and connection to nature and community. Creating a public hub where the community can gather to learn from experience and be taught by example, honoring their history together will help bridge this gap.
