Thesis Abstract
How can we use different design strategies, such as sensory design to help accommodate autistic adults and improve their quality of life in a home care facility?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in adults has only recently been studied within the past 20 years, so there is no specialized design or architecture for autistic individuals. Research shows that there are not enough home care living facilities geared toward autistic adults that accommodate specialized design strategies, such as sensory design, which alters how a space looks, feels, smells, sounds, and functions. Incorporating design strategies that accommodate autistic individuals is crucial to fulfill and improve their quality of life and create a more comfortable and positive built environment.
