Sophie Stockwell

Artist Biography

Sophie Stockwell is a lifestyle and portrait photographer from Cape Cod who is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography. She first became interested in photography in middle school because of her father, he was always the guy at family trips and reunions that would have his camera at his hip. He would always be snapping pictures of Sophie and their family doing things regardless of people wanting their picture taken or not. After experiencing this, she knew photography was something she wanted to pursue as a career.

Over the course of her four years at Endicott College, Sophie’s work took a completely different turn. She considered herself as a landscape photographer which has now since changed and her specialty turned into portraiture. She was very influenced by her fellow classmates. Throughout school, Sophie learned and experimented with different techniques, allowing her to morph her photographic style.

Sophie currently captures family portraits, senior portraits, engagements, and lifestyle work. She loves creating special moments and memories that families, seniors, and couples can look back on and remember for the rest of their lives.

Thesis Abstract

My senior thesis project is a series of portraits of my family members and close friends in environments that are associated or related to them. I wanted to highlight each individual by exploring their different characteristics and relationships they share.  In each image I have tried to emphasize their unique qualities and reveal their differences through the specific environments in which I chose to photograph them in. By engaging them in this process, I wanted to explore how I could view an individual to that would be present and engaged with the camera enabling me to tell a story about each of them.
