Artist Biography
Having been born and raised on Nantucket island, this project hits close to home for Tierney. There is a general, very frustrating misunderstanding that as a result of the affluence of the hot Summer vacation spot, the island faces no issues with homelessness and housing affordability. Both passion, and an inherent appreciation and love for her community were the driving forces behind her thesis.
Following graduation, Tierney plans on returning home to Nantucket and continuing to work for Olson Twombly Interior Design, a residential interior architecture firm that she has had the pleasure of being a part of for the last three and a half years. Simultaneously, she will prepare to take the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) certification exams in October of this year.
Thesis Abstract
The local Nantucket community stands upon infinite complaints about the state of the accessibility of local affordable housing efforts. Both public opinion and varying human living needs are not being considered, and changes are not being proposed or made. There is a better, more inclusive way to conquer the Nantucket housing crisis. Located in a desirable area, by creating one true universal design plan while still providing users with interchangeable customizable features, the very different living needs and standards of users can be more easily met while they can still be given the opportunity to make their space their own, and the stigma will slowly lose relevance.
