Sarah Horgan

Artist Biography

Sarah Horgan will be graduating with a BFA in Interior Architecture this Spring. She is pleased to be going back to Spagnolo Gisness & Company as a junior interior designer this Summer. Sarah has been with the company for 10 months now and is thrilled to make the move to Boston and work full-time. Outside the classroom- Sarah has served in leadership roles with various organizations. She was an Orientation Leader, Orientation Assistant, LIGHThouse Facilitator, Project Connect Facilitator, and a Student Government Community Representative. It was these roles that inspired Sarah to create a design that connects the motives to the physical world. This thesis served as a passion project for Sarah, challenging her to rethink what she thought she knew about DEI, continue educating herself on its importance of it, and learn how it applies to a university setting through design. Sarah would like to thank all students and staff that served as inspiration through her thesis project- their feedback and vulnerability built the code of morals and values of the project, inspiring the ideas for the all-inclusive student center.

Thesis Abstract

Awareness of others’ backgrounds; differences in racial, gender, and sexual orientation, allows for the creation of a community that is inclusive and supportive. Understanding these students’ past experiences of hatred, sexism, or discrimination, in addition to how their mental health is affected by these acts, aids in the creation of programs and resources to support them. Within the design process, I’ll be combining areas of student services such as residence life, dining operations, and educational sectors, with wellness, sociability, clubs, organizations, etc. Students will be more likely to be surrounded by students of not only similar but unique interests to them. Offering dining opportunities, wellness programs, spiritual practice spaces, classes, residence halls, and spaces for growth, learning, sociability, and inclusivity, will provide the hope for new, deeper friendships and relationships to be formed. The inclusive design will serve as a beacon of possibility for a campus that offers equal opportunity for all students within academics, and social aspects of their college experience.
