Thesis Abstract
Grove is an intergenerational community center in Tempe, Arizona that aims to connect all users through mentorship programs, shared learning environments, and collaborative creative spaces. It responds to the question: “How can creating an intergenerational community space support the overall health, connection, and welfare of people across different generations?”. With a focus on children and older adults, this center promotes socialization between the younger and older generations. By breaking ageist stereotypes, users will form reciprocal relationships and feel a communal sense of belonging. Dedicated community-building spaces like the Learning Kitchen, Make Believe Room, Library, and Learning Lounge encourage collaborative, hands-on engagement that benefits users of all ages. As an intergenerational community hub, Grove will allow all ages to create meaningful, in-person connections that can strengthen overall health, safety, and wellness of all users for an improved quality of life.
