Thesis Abstract

Little Harmonies is a music therapy rehabilitation center designed for elementary-aged children who have experienced emotional trauma. This project answers the question “ Can music therapy have a positive impact on children’s mental health who have suffered an emotional trauma?” Little Harmonies explores how interior architecture can support healing by integrating music therapy into a thoughtfully designed environment, ultimately demonstrating that music-based interventions can have a positive impact on children’s mental health. The design emphasizes multisensory engagement without overstimulation, allowing children to explore sound, texture, and movement in a way that supports emotional regulation and cognitive development. The music therapy center incorporates interactive elements and specialized techniques to encourage self-expression, confidence, and healing through music. Surrounding programmatic zones, including the education wing, residential wing, wellness wing, dining areas, and shared lounges, create a holistic environment that supports both individual and group experiences. Interactive features, such as the music wall and immersive sensory installations, are designed not only as playful elements but as tools for learning, communication, and trust-building between children and caregivers. These components promote collaboration, social connection, and emotional resilience. Little Harmonies demonstrates how thoughtfully designed environments can empower children, reduce anxiety, and foster emotional renewal, positioning music therapy as a powerful and viable alternative to traditional therapeutic approaches.
