Thesis Abstract

Penni was created with the goal of encouraging young adults, specifically Generation Z, to educate themselves on personal finance while they are young, better preparing them to manage their money for the long term. By integrating familiar design patterns and interactions that young adults encounter in popular social  apps, Penni aims to create an immediate connection with users in their late teens and early twenties. By adopting the tone of a friendly, “older sibling” rather than a rigid corporate entity, Penni makes financial literacy feel attainable rather than anxiety-inducing or shameful.

Within the app, users can set budget categories and spending targets to build confidence in their financial habits. A key feature of the experience is the ability to chat with Penni, the app’s mascot, who provides personalized recommendations on spending and saving goals. Interactive lesson modules further gamify the experience, transforming complex financial topics into “snackable” education.

Ultimately, Penni is built on the values of empowerment, clarity, and growth. It bridges the gap between earning money and understanding it, providing a safe, supportive space for the next generation to take control of their financial futures.
