Thesis Abstract
Key Residential Hub is a residential hub focused on providing necessities for people aging out of foster care, such as shelter, food, healthcare, and the ability to find a community. While in foster care, all needs are provided and should be taken care of. At the age of 18-21, these youths age out of foster care and have to rely on themselves to get the basic necessities. This creates a large portion of these individuals to face homelessness or a lack of food and healthcare. Creating a residential hub where people ages 16-26 can not only live in but also have different nontraditional amenities that allow them to focus on other factors of their lives. The building provides the basic necessities like food, healthcare, and housing, so they can focus on their journey of self-discovery and creating a community. Throughout the space, there are different community space opportunities for work, including the public work space, computer lab, and the communal living room/kitchen area. There is also an outside atrium with different sections such as a center fire pit seating area, deck and grill section, outdoor game space, and a movie projector. Inside the building, there is a food store with different features for the residents and a healthcare center that focuses on both mental and physical health. The 2nd- 4th floors are filled with different-sized apartments, accommodating different situations for each person. Each apartment also has access to one of the storage units on the floor and a balcony that they can fill and decorate as they please. Key Residential Hub stands to provide a place to create a home, to have a fresh start, and to allow people to focus on their self-discovery while going through a major life transition.
