Thesis Abstract

Leading up to her senior year, Lexi was unsure of what she wanted her thesis to solve. She knew she wanted to utilize adaptive reuse and historic preservation somehow, but lacked a specific idea until reading a novel in her Boston Literature class that highlighted the city’s homelessness issue. The true story shed light on the inequality of shelter beds to the unhoused population, ultimately leaving many people sleeping outside. That week happened to be the coldest of the year, where frostbite could set in after only spending minutes outside. With this new knowledge, Lexi couldn’t stop wondering if everybody had someplace safe and warm to spend the night, as shelters were already over capacity, and how dangerous and unfair the situation was for this already stigmatized community. Inspired by this, she created the Daybreak House: Center for Housing Support with the goal to break the cycle of homelessness rather than merely providing temporary shelter. The Daybreak House fosters community, and provides much needed resources such as counseling, education, career services, and access to hygiene facilities. Throughout her design, Lexi utilized a variety of design theories and techniques to create a welcoming, calm, homey, yet sophisticated environment that will allow unhoused individuals and families to get the fresh start they need towards permanent housing.
