Thesis Abstract

Residential treatment facilities give people a better chance for long-term recovery, rather than institutional settings, because it keeps patients in the community. Although, for mothers, there aren’t many options for receiving treatment that also keeps them and their child together. There is also a lack of focus on the quality of life and programming that would help patients sustain healthy habits once released. Residential treatment facilities that focus on quality of life and design may encourage young mothers, more specifically ages 15-24, recovering from substance abuse issues to seek help by allowing them to heal with their child in a safe and harmonious environment.
