Thesis Abstract

The Community Collective: The College Library During the Rise of Artificial Intelligence redefines what it means to be a library on a college campus in the presence of artificial intelligence. Rather than a hub for book collection and storage, The Community Collective emphasises community engagement and new social norms for libraries. Most college libraries only circulate roughly 20% of the physical literature due to the accessibility of digital materials, meaning 80% of the physical literature is sitting on shelves untouched. The Community Collective focuses on utilizing floor space intentionally to accommodate people in the community. Promoting collaboration and social interaction, the spaces in the Community Collective reflect the integration of traditional library spaces and technology-driven labs. On college campuses, the library is known as the place where students gather to do homework, study, and check out physical literature. As libraries are being used less due to the accessibility of artificial intelligence in education, there is less of a need for libraries. By creating a more focused environment that reflects the contributions of artificial intelligence integrations, the college library will better fit the needs of students and the functions within a college campus. How can the higher education library reflect the ongoing changes of artificial intelligence on a college campus? The Community Collective.
