Thesis Abstract

The Comfort Crafts Company provides activity kits to children and teens receiving inpatient care in hospitals. These activities are made to be used on a tray table and can be easily stored away. The recycled cardboard packaging balances the playful illustrations that hint at the contents of each kit to create an inviting experience without being too overwhelming. Through our website, patients can select an activity kit and have it delivered directly to their hospital room, giving them the power of choice at a time when their freedom and ability to make choices is limited.

During my thesis research, I found a book about applying the design thinking process to healthcare scenarios to improve patient outcomes, which inspired me to reflect on my own experience as a pediatric cancer patient. Although I don’t remember much of that time, the hospital staff and volunteers that brought arts and crafts projects to my room brightened the stark hospital atmosphere. They left a lasting impression on my memories, which has allowed me to remember the experience more positively overall. Through The Comfort Crafts Company, I wanted to share the joy that crafts and activities can bring during a hospital stay.
